St Francis, Katete
St Francis Hospital P.Bag 11 Katete, Zambia

This is the first sight that patients have of St Francis’ Hospital, Katete, Zambia.
Many have come a long way, perhaps on foot or on the back of a bicycle. From here there is another 100 yards to reach Outpatients.
There is a large grassed circle with a road round it. Nurses Homes and Staff Houses are sited round the circle.
The photograph was taken at the beginning of the rains so the grass has not grown up yet, but the trees have their new leaves.
The hospital is situated 500km from Lusaka and 125km from the Malawi border. Zambia has a tropical climate and a spectrum of tropical diseases due to poverty and climate. HIV is endemic and an example of this is that the incidence of tuberculosis has quadrupled since 1985. KATETE district has a population of 170,000, mainly subsistence farmers and small traders.
Founded as a mission hospital by the Anglican Church in 1948, St Francis has developed into a general hospital with 360 beds and cots. St Francis is the only hospital in Katete, and also acts as a referral hospital for the Eastern Province, pop 1million. The Hospital receives a monthly grant in aid from the Government which can not cover all costs. Donations from Zambia and abroad are vital for the running of the hospital. Patients fees are a small contribution to the total budget. Capital projects are entirely funded from donations, mostly as projects
